Exile is the nursury of nationality

Nóisin is a collective of Irish creatives between Amsterdam and Dublin, inspired by the Celtic Revival and Irish Renaissance that followed in the late 1800s, based on the concept that Irish identity only fully emerges from abroad.

Our mission is to contribute to a new Irish Renaissance and cultural revival. Helping to create a new notion of Ireland by connecting our diaspora and providing a platform for the free exchange of ideas through a series of collaborative projects, programmes, performances and publications centred around modernising and recontextualising our Irish heritage.

‘Notions’ is a commonly used expression by Irish mothers to describe somone with with delusions of grandeur - those with a want in them. Our symbol is the wolf mac tire, which translates to son of the land. A creature hunted to extinction, the last of which was said to have been seen in the Wicklow mountains. In ancient Irish mythology, wolves were associated with bravery and loyalty, and were considered to be protectors and guides. Many of Ireland’s greatest heroes were said to be raised by wolves, hopefully a few more will be.
